Portrait of the Artist as a Young Copywriter

Monday, April 13th, 2009

It’s a secret talent of mine (mostly because I didn’t get my hard earned illustrator credit at the Addy’s), but in addition to being a not half bad writer, I can draw a stick figure like nobody’s business. My skill with the pen is on full display in the award-winning Edugrader ad campaign I worked on. It’s probably the best drawing I’ve ever done; it took me like three hours to finish the shading on the calculator.

In other news, that whole massive unemployment angle we decided to go with for the ads (after the suicide theme was deemed too risque for the schoolmarm set and the general public at large) sure seemed funny two years ago, not so much today. Ah, well.  But hey, look at those fancy pants drawings!

America Offline

I believe this is what some people in the copywriting community refer to as “street cred.” Two Christmases ago Santa brought me a Smith & Corona typewriter that was once owned by my great-grandfather. It even came with a snazzy case that looks like something an orphan would carry in a production of Annie and some weirdo pencil which apparently served a purpose back in the day. I’ve never actually used my fancy pants typewriter, as that would probably involve buying ink (and I haven’t the faintest idea where to find that without paying for shipping), but I love the clickety clack sound it makes and the way it looks on my book shelf. Many thanks to my dear mother who lugged it all the way across the country when I decided that navigating a crowded post-holiday airport with two 45lb duffel bags and a 20lb typewriter was going to be too much holiday travel stress for me to stand.

Silver ‘n gold

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

It was probably all part of some elaborate scheme to help Ron Randle, our creative director, pass his Spanish class, but in the end, I think we all won. Or at least Juan Marin and I did! Woo! Our campaign for the Language Academy of the Carolinas took home a gold at the Charlotte Addy’s and, we just found out, snagged us a silver at the district Addy’s. Additional props go out to Senior Craig, the only client to tell us to ever tell us to do whatever we wanted and actually mean it, and Catalina Kulczar who took the awesome photo that appears on the “Europe” ad. Whoop Whoop!

Art Too Bad To Be Ignored

Sunday, April 5th, 2009

The Museum of Bad Art just may be my favorite museum that I have never visited. The MOBA is located in Boston “in the basement of the Dedham Community Theatre, conveniently located just outside the men’s room. The nearby flushing helps maintain a uniform humidity.”

The quality of the art on their site is inversely proportional to the quality of the copywriting. Their newsletters are hands down the best I have ever read.

Oh Those Boys Are Much Too Much

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

This is hands down my favorite commercial from 2008. And a PSA to boot. Rock on, Ad Council! Not only is the set-up pitch perfect, but the actor was born to play this role. Take it away!
